What Dental Issues Can Crowns Resolve?

Restore

Crowns are the go-to solution for solving tooth decay too advanced for dental fillings. The dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth, leaving behind a fraction of it. Dental crowns restore the defaced tooth, giving it structure and restoring its chewing ability. It also prevents the cavity-causing bacteria (if any) from escaping and spreading to the neighboring teeth.

A better bite

Patients with chronic bruxism can wear down their teeth, compromising their effectiveness in chewing and biting. Dental crowns can restore the worn portion of the teeth, allowing you to chew and bite properly.

Shape

You can also get dental crowns to give shape to your misshapen tooth. The dentist will create a custom crown that restores the shape of your tooth/teeth for a flawless smile. The crown is made to match your tooth's color, so you don’t have to worry about the bonded tooth standing out from the rest.

The Dental Crown Treatment Process

Examination and Preparation

Dr. Durham will first examine your teeth and oral health to determine your candidacy for dental crowns. He’ll examine the affected teeth and determine whether crowns are the best restorative solution. If so, he’ll use a local anesthetic to numb the area, then remove the decayed portions of the teeth with a laser or drill, before moving to the next step.

Taking Impressions and Fitting the Temporary Crown

After preparing your teeth, Dr. Durham will use dental putty or a 3D digital scanner to take impressions of your teeth. These impressions are then sent to a lab to manufacture your custom crowns. Meanwhile, he’ll create and fit a temporary crown on your teeth to wear while you wait for the real ones.

Crown Placement and Post-Treatment Care

Your dental crowns should be ready and we’ll call you in to place them on the affected teeth. Crown placement involves removing the temporary crown and cleaning the tooth before checking the crown’s fit and cementing it in place with dental adhesive. You’ll then receive instructions for taking care of your dental crowns before the dentist releases you.

Caring for your dental crowns is as easy as brushing and flossing your teeth every day. You should also avoid biting into objects that aren't food or using your crowned teeth to bite into hard foods like carrots. You should also arrange frequent dentist checkups to ensure your crown’s structural integrity.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Crowns typically last five to fifteen years, depending on the materials and how well you take care of them. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns last the longest. Closely followed by zirconia crowns. However, you can extend your crown’s longevity by practicing proper oral hygiene, scheduling regular dental visits, and avoiding hard foods.
